Stamped and formed parts

Stamped and formed parts produced under contract

Our company Menz Stahlwaren GmbH has specialized in the field of combined stamping and forming technology, as well as inline manufacturing of modules and complex wire and strip components. We manufacture your components on machines made by Bihler (http://www.bihler.de/index_eng.htm).

This production method offers enormous advantages over conventional stamping and forming processes. Additional production steps can be integrated in the automatic inline manufacturing sequence of the stamped and formed components. Due to its special design, the stamping and forming tool can be customized fast and at low cost. Moreover, maintenance costs are minimized. Stamped and formed parts can be manufactured of strip or wire material and from prefabricated parts.

Even complex components made from different materials and the assembly of externally supplied units can be realized.

Stamped and formed parts made of strip or wire

The technology of complex stamped and formed parts made of steel, aluminum, copper, etc. includes the stamping process, as well as forming and bending steps for obtaining the final contour. Stamped and formed parts can be manufactured from wire or strip material and prefabricated or semi-finished products.

Stamped and formed parts in combination with further manufacturing steps

The integration of additional technologies into the production of stamped and formed parts is the basis of an innovative, precise, economic and stable manufacturing process:

  • Complex stamping
  • Multiple forming and bending
  • Progressive die technology
  • Assembling
  • Winding
  • Welding
  • Thread cutting, thread forming
  • Screwing
  • 100%-inspection

The possibility to combine these processes leads to the advantages of combined stamping and forming production and inline manufacturing. It is possible to produce components with externally added parts to receive complex stamped and formed parts and assemblies.

Advantages in productivity for stamped and formed parts

Stamping and forming in one work step allows more advanced, highly productive production processes compared to compound tool sets, as long as deep drawing of the part is avoided. An adapted part design with a high percentage of forming work can be produced particularly efficiently, productively and of high quality on the Bihler automatic stamping and forming machine.

Stamped and formed parts in comparison to compound tool sets

Another advantage of the stamping and forming technology over compound tool sets is its high flexibility. Long tool lengths can be used within the smallest work space. The combination of press technology in the feed area of the machine and the possibility to move several sliding carriages in individual time intervals via cam discs and on several axes radially or linearly opens completely new alternatives. Simple cutting operations or cutting and forming operations can be combined with complex bending operations including freely selectable sequences of movements with multiple axes. The sliding carriages are the machining units that can be placed in several positions on the base plate of the stamping and forming machine. This allows access from the side and the front, as well as the rotation of the workpiece around its vertical axis.  Using flexible slide carriages, the workpiece can be clamped against a definitely moving stamp resulting in higher precision and better repeatability.

Stamped and formed parts made of strip or wire

Stamped and formed parts can be manufactured of strip or wire material, as well as of prefabricated individual parts. Two automatic stamping and forming machines made by Bihler are available to us for production.

Bihler GRM 50

  • Maximum strip width: 80 mm
  • Maximum strip thickness: 2 mm
  • Maximum wire diameter 5 mm
  • Maximum nominal power of eccentric press 250 kN

Bihler GRM 80 E

  • Maximum strip width: 80 mm
  • Maximum strip thickness: 2 mm
  • Maximum wire diameter 6 mm
  • Maximum nominal power of eccentric press 300 KN

Using an additional separating and feeding unit, we can automatically feed pre-fabricated and semi-manufactured products into the machine in form of bulk material that can be further machined in an effective way. Using an optical image processing system we are able to perform a 100% final inspection during the stamping and forming process. Functional dimensions can be evaluated automatically and protocols of results can be created. This ensures that our customers will not receive defective stamped and formed parts.

For the production of small and medium-size series, for instance CNC-formed wire parts, we rely on successful supplier relations.

Stamping and forming tool

The stamping and forming tool consists of individual modules connected in series. The individual, separately adjustable, well accessible and low maintenance tools are preferable to a rigid, connected, and closed compound system. Apart from high stroke numbers for final stamped and formed parts, the stamping and forming tool can be adapted fast and cost-efficient to the customer's requirements, or basic modules are used for comparable new items. Moreover, stamped and formed parts with medium to very high piece numbers provide cost advantages. Therefore, the individual modules for producing the stamped and formed parts are manufactured as precise as necessary. If a compound tool set is used, the whole tool must often comply with highest requirements on accuracy. Based on our experience, we favour the stamping and forming tools over the compound tool sets because a higher quality of parts is reached with lower production cost.

Quality control of stamped and formed parts

During the whole process, an optical image processing system allows a 100% final inspection. The functional dimensions of stamped and formed parts can be evaluated automatically and result protocols can be created. This ensures a continuous quality of your stamped and formed parts.
